Skyline coffee roasters, in collaboration with Hector and bailey.
After supporting their little coffee shop in Gordon road for many years, we were asked by Jamie and Dylan to help with their first second store.
The long and narrow space, tricky for a typical café, is defined by an elongated bar, cutting the space in half thus creating a long front and back of house. The bar acts as a datum that unites the functional aspects of the café across its length; prep, pay, display, coffee making and pick up.
Conceptually the layout revolves around the coffee, the main reason you visit Skyline. So it made sense that the coffee machine takes pride and place as the first thing you see when walking into the café. The space is also north facing which meant it could take advantage of great light through the day and open up to create an active and vibrant street edge.
It was important to our client that we capture the vibe of the existing Skyline shop in Durban, yet respond to its new upmarket context. By mixing the urban and gritty Durban city undertones, with the laid-back beach life of Salt Rock, the brands existing palette of black and white, steel and timber and green (plants) were elevated with the addition of gentle colours, leather bench-seating, terrazzo and brass detailing.
