A site responsive, sustainable home overlooking a Nature Reserve
Overlooking the top end of Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, this home is driven by sustainable design principles and a deep respect for the natural environment it resides in. Its orientation is carefully planned to maximize North light, creating a comfortable living environment throughout the day. The kitchen and dining areas connect directly to the northern veranda, covered by a hybrid polycarbonate and timber slatted roof, allowing light to penetrate back into the house.
The simple and horizontal flat concrete roof structure, designed to visually sink the building into the landscape, complements its natural surroundings. Materials have been kept honest and robust, allowing each one to subtly speak for itself.
The design of the home directly responds to the site. Positions of openings and the specific framing of views are determined by the location of existing trees and views of the distant and near experience of the nearby reserve.
